I’ve wanted to draw James Baldwin for years, YEARS. Every time, I had a chance to sit down and do it, I just felt that I wasn’t ready.. Sometimes, paintings happen not when you want them to, but when your skillset finally meets the image in your head.

Today is James’s birthday, and I can think of no one better who embodies the energy of the sun, capable of shedding the brightest light on how we’ve been complicit in our society’s systemic racism, brave and true to demanding we do better.
