Celia Cruz "Queen of Libras"

I can't think of anyone who embodies joy for me, like Cuban singer and Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz. Growing up with her music at weddings, Quinces, and birthdays. when Celia's "La Vida Es un Carnaval" came on, it was time to dance. (I was shy so I sat down but it was cute to people watch)

Celia was always unapologetically Afro-Latina, and mastered Afro-Cuban genres like guaracha, rumba, afro, son, and bolero, before becoming more well-known for salsa. In the 1960s, after the Cuban Revolution caused the nationalization of the music industry. she lived her life in exile, first in Mexico then the U.S. Like a true Libra, Celia maintained her joy & used her music to celebrate her heritage, and bring us together on the dancefloor.
