The Elders Series: Audre Lorde Reprint
This piece holds such a special place in my heart. And now it's back from the vault!
It was the first that I felt technically proud of, meaning that I finally felt a sense of control over my unforgiving medium that is watercolor. Just like water can be peaceful and give life, it can also drown you in the next second. Watercolor has been one of my most treasured teachers. This piece was also the first to be inside of a museum. And while I understand these spaces have a LONG way to go to be inclusive and for us, this immigrant kid from a small town in Jalisco with no formal art training made it in. Thinking of all the magic Audre and other black femmes have given us, and how we can be in constant solidarity to make sure they are safe, cited for their knowledge and loved.
